Amazon

The Amazon is the reason Jungle Fishing exists. Blackwater rivers, flooded forest, and fish that don’t exist anywhere else on Earth — this is the hardest fishing to reach in South America, and the best.

This isn’t one river. The Amazon basin covers a network of blackwater and white water systems — the Rio Negro, the Amazon’s main channel, and hundreds of tributaries — each with its own water color, structure, and species mix. What they share is remoteness, and fish that see almost no fishing pressure.

The Amazon is peacock bass country —Açu, Borboleta, Popóca, and Pinima all swim these waters, each with its own size class and fight. But peacock bass is only the headline. This is also where you find Arapaima, one of the largest freshwater fish on the planet; Payara,the vampire-fanged predator that hits like nothing else; and the deep-water giants — Piraíba and its juvenile stage, Filhote— that can turn a fight into an hours-long standoff.

Round out the lineup with Aruanã, Fish, Jacundá, Redtail Catfish, Shovel Nose Catfish, and Surubi, and the Amazon covers more gamefish diversity than anywhere else in South America.

The dry season— roughly September through February, depending on the specific river system— is prime time, when falling water concentrates fish in predictable areas and clears visibility for sight-fishing.

This is expedition fishing, not resortfishing. Long boat runs, real jungle, and water that fewanglers will ever see. It’s also exactlywhy the fish here fight the way they do.
