Filhote
Brachyplatystoma filamentosum

Local / Portuguese name
Filhote
Scientific name
Brachyplatystoma filamentosum
Typical size
Filhote refers to juveniles under roughly 110 lbs; adults (Piraíba) can exceed 300 lbs.
Habitat
Deep river channels and estuarine waters; one of the longest-migrating freshwater fish, traveling thousands of miles between spawning grounds and river mouths.
More Detail
The Filhote is the 'junior' stage of the Piraíba — South America's largest catfish and one of the biggest freshwater fish on the planet. Even at this stage it's a deep-water brawler capable of a long, punishing fight, and it's often the first sign that a true giant might be working the same stretch of river.
